Community OverviewLocationThe city of Fordyce is strategically located at the intersection of two U.S. Highways, 79 and 167, and State Highway 8. We are within an hour's drive of Interstates 30 and 40, the Port of Little Rock, and Little Rock National Airport. PopulationOur city, the county seat of Dallas County, has a population of 4,799. It is the trade center for a five county area and has a draw of over 18,000 within a twenty-mile radius. Fordyce has great growth potential. TransportationRail service is provided by a mainline railroad, the Union Pacific, with switching provided by the F&P Railroad. Trucking service is readily available locally, as well as efficient service from out-of-town truckers. The H. L. Hopkins-Fordyce Airport provides a 3,200 feet paved and lighted runway, capable of handling corporate jets. MIRL & rotating beacons are available from dusk to dawn. CommunicationsLocal media includes a weekly newspaper, the Fordyce News-Advocate. Also available are the Pine Bluff Commercial, and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Radio stations KBJT-AM and KQEW-FM provide local news, music, sportscasts, and advertising to a five county area. Cable TV is also available. EducationFordyce schools are North Central Association accredited. Available to our graduating seniors is one of the very best scholarship programs in the state. Our public schools emphasize scholarship and academic excellence. The Dallas County Adult Education Center provides services which enable people to obtain a GED and to upgrade skills in math and English, as well as training in various job areas. The Dallas County Literacy Council also offers pre-GED and Life Skills Training. Timberland Tech, a private school, provides adult training for a commercial truck driving license. The recently remodeled Dallas County Library has outstanding research facilities, a children's program, on-line availablility, and an extensive genealogy section. Dallas County Industrial ParkDallas County Industrial Park is a ninety acre Industrial Park with land available to any viable business or industry wishing to locate there. Water, sewer, electrical service (including three-phase wiring) are available. Retail CenterFordyce is the trade center for a five counties area. We have friendly merchants providing a good variety of quality clothing, hardware and building supplies, furniture, jewelry, gifts, florists, and restaurants. Antique stores are here for browsing and finding that perfect treasure. The central core of the city is being renovated to give it a quaint village atmosphere. Recreation-City Parks /Civic CenterThe original city park contains playgrounds, picnic areas, lighted tennis courts, and little league baseball fields. Our Civic Center Complex, built in 1995, provides both indoor and outdoor recreation year-round. Rooms, large and small, are available for meeting places, and/or banquets, concerts, or family reunions. A gymnasium is available, along with racquetball, exercise equipment, and an indoor walking track with locker room facilities. Classes are offered in karate, aerobics and art. The facility gives residents a health club, with no membership fee! Outside, we offer soccer in the fall and four softball fields in the spring and summer. There are swimming and wading pools with youth and adult lessons offered. Tennis courts are available at this facility as well. A walking trail around the area grounds is also available. Country ClubThe Fordyce Country Club is a private facility with a nine hole golf course and swimming pool available to members. Game and FishWe are fortunate to have available one of the largest deer populations in the state, as well as plenty of turkeys and squirrels for the avid hunter. Fishing areas abound. The state's first Game and Fish Commission lake, Tri-County Lake, is located here. TourismOur friendly citizens welcome tourists - both individual and in groups. Our area is enhanced by the number of historical sites in and around Fordyce. Thirty sites are listed on the National Historic Register. The Charlotte Street Historic District contains eighteen craftsman-style homes, some of which were designed by architect Charles Thompson in the early 1900s. The 36 original stained glass windows of the historic Presbyterian Church are very special. Other listings include The First United Methodist Church, Wynne Phillips Bed and Breakfast, A.B. Banks Building, and the Cotton Belt Railroad Depot, which is currently being restored. The Dallas County Museum contains artifacts of the early days of Dallas County from Indian inhabitants to antiques from early settlers. Special displays include those of area native Paul "Bear" Bryant, Dr. T.E. Rhine, the Nutt Brothers Basketball team, the Fordyce Club, and others. High school football began in Fordyce and the city is developing REDBUG ALLEY, which will honor all who have continued that winning tradition over the years. The Klappenbach Bakery has been consistently voted "Best" by readers of the Arkansas Times and has also been featured in Southern Living magazine. Best described as a colonial-revival, turn of the century, family home, it is listed on the National Register and was named by Country Inns magazine as one of the "Ten Best Luxury Affordables."
