Southern Arkansas UniversitySouthern Arkansas University located in Magnolia, 67 miles from Fordyce, offers 54 associate and bachelor's degree programs and a master's degree program in education with 19 specialty areas. Its more than 60 campus organizations offer students the opportunity to pursue interests ranging from politics to intramural athletics. More than one-third of its students are transfer students from other institutions or nontraditional students. Well known for its quality education, SAU's School of Business regularly claims high honors in national competition. In 1995, Business Administration students won nine national awards at the Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference. The Small Business Institute case studies prepared by SAU students have been selected first in the state for the past five years. The School of Business is housed in the school's newest building, the $4.3 million Business Agri/Business building. In addition, SAU's Phi Alpha Theta chapter, the history honor society, was selected as the best chapter in the nation in its category in 1991 and 1992. Since the institution's founding in 1909 as an agriculture and mechanical college, the livestock and agriculture programs have shared prominence with SAU's other degree programs. Tours of the university's 658-acre showcase farm offer a look at Polled Hereford, Limousine, Santa Gertrudis, Shorthorn and Texas Longhorn beef cattle; Holstein, Jersey, and Guernsey dairy cattle; swine; sheep; horses; poultry; show barns; vegetable growing; horticulture crop evaluations plots; and composting facilities.
